Geico boat catches fire at Offshore Grand Prix
SARASOTA – A witness who saw the Miss Geico racing boat catch fire on Saturday evening says the crew was initially unaware of the blaze.
David Gregg said he was with friends on his boat at the Ritz-Carlton on Lido Key when the Miss Geico “went flying past me. Its tail pipes were glowing like the Space Shuttle. Suddenly, flames were coming out the back and black smoke.”
The two people on board soon looked back and noticed the fire. They briefly attempted to put it out with a fire extinguisher but abandoned the effort and jumped out, Gregg said.
No one was reportedly injured in the fire that happened at about 5:30 p.m., roughly 250 yards off Lido Beach. The Miss Geico was supposed to be in Sunday’s 2012 Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix off Lido Key.
